Spanning 128 acres in the grounds of Castle Howard, this arboretum is a joint venture between Castle Howard Estates and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Established in 1959, the arboretum boasts a diverse collection of over 7,000 trees, showcasing species from various parts of the world. Visitors can expect to see native British trees, including oak, ash, and birch, which provide a glimpse into the region's natural heritage. There are also exotic species from regions such as Chile, Australasia, and North America, enriching the landscape with their unique forms and colours. Rare and endangered trees also find a home at the Yorkshire Arboretum, the collection includes species that are not commonly found in other arboreta, contributing to conservation efforts.

Red squirrels are a crucial part of the UK’s natural heritage. Once widespread across the country, their population has significantly declined due to habitat loss and competition from the invasive grey squirrel. The Yorkshire Arboretum plays a pivotal role in conservation efforts aimed at boosting the red squirrel population.
The arboretum hosts a small breeding group of red squirrels, maintaining a captive population that is essential for future reintroductions into the wild. This initiative is part of a broader project designed to create a new breeding colony, which is vital for the species' survival in Britain.
Visitors to the Yorkshire Arboretum have the unique opportunity to observe these charming creatures in their natural habitat. The Red Squirrel Enclosure is open daily, with the best chances of spotting the squirrels occurring in the morning and afternoon when they are most active.
